Government launches platform provides information on biodiversity in Mozambique

The Ministry of Land and Environment (MTA) in partnership  with the the Society of  Fauna Conservation ( SCF) officially launched  tree outgrowth of the project CONNECT, among them the Information System of Biodiversity (SIBMOZ) developed by USAID through SPEED Project.

SIBMOZ is a Government online platform important  for making decisions about issues related to biodiversity. The platform includes links to the Government of Mozambique's biodiversity strategies and plans, international conventions to which Mozambique belongs, as well as the legal framework that governs Mozambique's natural capital, constituting a national mechanism to report and interact with the Convention on the Biological Diversity.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Minister of Land and Environment, Fernando Bemane de Sousa, praised the fact that Mozambique has become one of the few countries in the world that provides all systematized information on national biodiversity, having launched the challenge to intensify the training of portal managers for full use of the platform.

For her part, the Director of USAID, Helen Pataki, considers that conservation is crucial for development, that  is why the US Government reiterates its support to Mozambique with programs and policies that conserve and restore forests; promote sustainable agriculture and fisheries; combat the trafficking of wild animals; enforce legislation, policies, and law enforcement; and expand Mozambican networks of conservation areas.

Other products launched at the same event were the new Environmental Licensing Management System (SGLA) and the Standard Sheet to support the assessment of Environmental Impact Studies) and officialization of the second phase of the COMBO+ program.

This event was held on the 23rd of May, as part of the celebration of the International Biodiversity Day, marked on the 22nd of May, whose motto is “Building a shared future for all life.
